Paint and Primer in One: When You Still Need a Primer

Paint and Primer in One: When You Still Need a Primer

Paint and primer in one covers most jobs on its own: painted walls in good shape, bare drywall, plaster, concrete, masonry and wood. You still need a separate primer when your paint doesn't include one, and on metal.

What paint and primer in one means

Kompozit PRO is sold as a 100% acrylic paint and primer in one. You put down two coats of PRO and skip the primer coat. It comes in Flat, Eggshell, Satin and Semi-Gloss.

Where PRO primes itself

Drywall, plaster, concrete, masonry, wood, stucco and previously painted surfaces. Aluminum and galvanized steel need proper prep first.

When to use a separate primer

  1. You're finishing with NEO or EKO. Neither one includes a primer, so bare drywall, plaster and masonry get a coat of PRIME first.
  2. Rusted steel. Treat it with a rust converter, then an anticorrosive primer, then the topcoat.
  3. Aluminum and galvanized metal. PRIME lists both on its data sheet.

New drywall, two ways

Two coats of PRO. Or one coat of PRIME and two coats of EKO for ceilings and flat walls.

Price

PRO $58 a gallon or $285 for 5 gallons. PRIME $179 for 5 gallons. EKO $39 a gallon or $165 for 5 gallons. We deliver across New York and New Jersey for $15 an order, free over $150.

Questions we get

How many coats of paint and primer in one do I need?

Two. That's what the PRO data sheet recommends.

Can I put PRO on bare wood?

Yes. Wood is on its list of surfaces.

Do I need primer over old paint?

Not on sound painted walls. Clean them, patch them, and paint.
