Garage Floor Paint That Holds Up to Hot Tires

Garage Floor Paint That Holds Up to Hot Tires

For a garage floor, use a 100% acrylic concrete paint that resists hot tire pickup, and put down two coats. A hot tire on soft paint can pull it off the slab. Kompozit STRONG resists hot tire pickup, primes bare concrete itself and dries to a scrubbable satin.

Prep

  1. Pressure wash. Degrease oil spots and rinse.
  2. Kill mildew with 1 part liquid bleach to 3 parts water, 10 minutes, then rinse.
  3. New concrete: let it cure 30 days first.
  4. Drip water on the slab. If it beads up, the concrete is too smooth or sealed: etch it so the paint can grip.
  5. Tape a square of plastic down overnight. Wet underneath means moisture is coming up. Fix that first.
  6. Let the floor dry completely.

Paint

  1. Work between 50 and 90°F, with no rain or snow in the 48 hour forecast.
  2. Cut in along the walls with a brush, then roll with a 3/8 inch nap or bigger.
  3. Recoat after 4 hours.

When you can use it

At 77°F and 50% humidity: walk on it after 8 hours, park after 48 to 72 hours, wash it after 30 days. Cold or damp air stretches all three.

Acrylic or epoxy

Epoxy is harder, but you mix two parts and race the pot life. STRONG rolls on from the can and touches up from the same can.

How much to buy

A gallon covers 300 to 400 square feet per coat, less on rough concrete. A one car garage of 12 by 20 feet takes about two gallons for two coats. A two car garage, 20 by 20, takes the 3.5 gallon pail. Colors: Dove Gray, Charcoal Gray, Patio Red.
