Concrete Floor Paint for Basements, Garages and Stoops

Concrete Floor Paint for Basements, Garages and Stoops

For a basement floor, a garage, a stoop or a patio, use an acrylic concrete paint and put down two coats. Kompozit STRONG goes on with a roller, primes itself on concrete and dries to the touch in about an hour.

Test the slab first

A basement slab can carry moisture up from the ground. Tape a two-foot square of plastic to the floor and leave it overnight. Water under the plastic in the morning means moisture is coming up from below. Fix that before you paint. Paint won't hold well on a slab that stays damp.

Prep

  1. Sweep and vacuum.
  2. Scrub off oil and grease, rinse, and let the floor dry.
  3. Scrape any peeling old paint.

Paint

  1. Work between 50 and 90°F.
  2. Cut in the edges with a brush, then roll the field.
  3. Wait 2 to 4 hours and roll the second coat.

STRONG is 100% acrylic with a satin finish. It resists hot tire pickup, so it holds up under a parked car. It cleans up with soap and water and it's low VOC.

How much to buy

On smooth concrete a gallon covers 300 to 400 square feet per coat. Raw and porous concrete drinks more, so plan less coverage there. A 3.5 gallon bucket gives two coats on about 500 to 700 square feet of smooth concrete.

Colors

Three ready-made colors: Dove Gray, Charcoal Gray and Patio Red.
