Ceiling Paint: What to Use and How Much

Ceiling Paint: What to Use and How Much

For ceilings, use a flat white. It has no shine, so it doesn't catch light from the windows or show roller lap marks. Kompozit EKO is a flat, zero VOC, 100% acrylic interior paint at $39 a gallon or $165 for 5 gallons.

Why flat

EKO measures 0 to 5 gloss units at 60 degrees. That's as flat as paint gets. Old plaster ceilings are rarely perfectly smooth, and flat hides that.

Bare plaster or new drywall

EKO doesn't include a primer. Put one coat of PRIME on bare surfaces first, then two coats of EKO.

Kitchens and bathrooms

Use PRO Satin on these ceilings. Steam and cooking grease need a finish you can wipe.

How much to buy

Measure the room's length and width and multiply. A 12 by 14 foot bedroom has a 168 square foot ceiling. Two coats make 336 square feet. At 400 square feet per gallon that's one gallon. At 300 it's a little more, so a rough ceiling needs a second gallon.

For a whole apartment, price out the 5 gallon bucket. EKO works out to $33 a gallon that way.

Painting it

  1. Cut in the edges with a brush.
  2. Roll in straight passes across the short side of the room.
  3. Wait 2 to 4 hours before the second coat.
